Nigerian designer Zainab Ashadu is the creator of the Zashadu brand. Her collection of designer bags is modern and her colorful creations use the ancient Nigerian art of tanning and leather dyeing.
Zainab Ashadu’s parents came from northern Nigeria, a region sadly in the news because of the Islamic insurgency that has been raging there since 2009. However, the Kano region has long been known for its high quality leather. that the designer turns into a line of leather goods that sell around the world.
The leather comes from Kano and from the old city of Sokoto – northwest of Nigeria. Python skins are provided by the local livestock farms

Anxious to work sustainably and act socially, Ashadu employs local tanners and helps to perpetuate local know-how passed down through generations. In addition, the skins of leather goods are traceable and the dyes used are vegetal and respectful of the environment.
The brand is marketed internationally: London, Miami, Dublit, Johannesburg and Paris.
French designer Charlotte Ziegler, who sells Zashadu bags at the Franck et Fils department store, said she was intrigued by Ashadu’s unusual profile and “sustainable luxury”: “It meets all the requirements it is made in Africa it’s beautiful, it’s made in a sustainable way using international standard”
